As a little kid up until the early teenage years I would go to Kauai every year with my family. I saw the kids there grow up island style learning to surf as early as 3 years old and by the time they were around seven years old fully fluent in the language of the ocean, ripping with so much style, confidence, and grace. I always wish I had that early entry into surfing but I went the roundabout way of learning to skateboard first (and being the groups photographer stationed at the bottom stair sets with a fisheye lens). Skateboarding is such a different type of practicing ground as its stable and consistent unlike in the ocean. It wasn’t until after college that one of my dearest friends and her life guard boyfriend who grew up island style took me out consistently and taught me how to read the waves. Thank you Taylor & Andrew for teaching me something I’ve always wanted to be able to do since I was a kid & it still wilds me out that I’ve got to shoot for surfing companies that I grew up flipping though all the advertisements in Surfer Magazine that I had a subscription to at age 10.
